University rankings

Kehm,B. M. and Stensaker, B (Eds). University Rankings, Diversity, and the New Landscape of Higher Education. Sense Publishers, Rotterdam and Taipeh, 2009.

This volume was published in an attempt to better understand the rather recent, but increasingly global phenomenon of university rankings and their effects on higher education. The authors investigate, among others, how different rankings work, how they reach their conclusions, and on what data and methodology they are built. If university rankings are to be regarded as reliable consumer information, they argue, then everyone should have an interest in basing them on valid methods and objectives. The book provides critical insights into the ways in which university rankings influence policy-making and the internal structure of the higher education sector. It is therefore a useful read for all stakeholders in higher education as well as for researchers, students, and journalists.
